The European Commission has given authorisation to the Italian government to grant state aid to certain livestock producers in Italy. The amount of aid, which is totally funded by Italy is ECU 39 million (Lira 78,500 million) and is being granted to producers to compensate them for losses arising from the impact of the BSE crisis on the market. Animals upon which aid was granted under the EU funded assistance are excluded from this scheme. The aid is paid in relation to animals slaughtered or sold during the period 1 April 1996 and the 31 January 1997. The actual level of aid per head foreseen varies between 60,000 Lira and 350,000 Lira, depending on the type of animal and the region of production.
