As part of its investigation into the compatibility with the common market of measures granting exemption from or reductions in social security contributions payable by municipal companies in Venice and Chioggia between 1995 and 1997, the Commission has called on Italy to provide it, within fifteen days of the decision being notified, with all the documents, information and data it needs in order to assess whether the above measures qualify for exemption under Article 86(2) of the Treaty. In particular, it needs to know whether the companies concerned are responsible for operating services of general economic interest and whether they are subject to the rules on competition in so far as the application of these rules does not obstruct the performance of the particular tasks assigned to them.
