The Extraterritorial Reach of Human Right treaties in humanitarian context

 

We are proud to introduce the Selected Topics in Public International Law Course (STiPIL Course) offered for the Academic Year 2008-2009  in the first semester (October-December 2008).

 
This 7 credits Optional Course deals for this year with problems of extraterritorial reach of human rights treaties and their interrelationship with international humanitarian law. 
The Course covers the following topics: the Revival of the Doctrine of Occupatio Bellica and the Future of Humanitarian Law, the Issue of Occupation in the ICJ Wall in Palestine Judgment,  Unlawful Territorial Situations and International Law, the Espace Juridique Européen Doctrine in the ECtHR Case-Law, the British Human Rights Act 1998 Overseas. Hints from the recent House of Lords Case-Law, Guantanamo: the Dark Side of the War For Democracy, Legislation and Maintenance of Order and Civil Life by Occupying Powers, Foreign Occupation and International Territorial Administration: a Confrontation to Overcome, Foreign Occupation and Crimes of War.   
The course will be taught by faculty members and guest lecturers, through a series of lectures and seminars  which will be held mainly in Villa Cerami building on Thursdays and Fridays.
A detailed syllabus and reading-list will be available to students at the beginning of the academic year. Students will be expected to have done the reading prior to the seminars. Students will also be expected to come to the seminars prepared to discuss the issues raised in the reading. On occasion, students will be expected to give short oral presentations (about 10 minutes) on an issue to be discussed in the seminar.
Examination will consist of  discussion of a Final Paper (not exceeding 10,000 words).
No formal enrollment is required to join the course for students of this School.
