Gender Issues and International Legal Standards

The Selected Topics in Public International Law Course (STiPIL Course) is a 7 credits Optional Course offered for the Academic Year 2009-2010  (First Semester October-December 2009), dealing with Gender Issues and International Legal Standards, celebrating the 30 th anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

The Course is organized jointly with the CRIO International Law Seminar Series and covers the following topics.

The History of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)
The Reservations to the Convention
The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women
The Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. A general Stocktaking (The CEDAW Committee)
The CEDAW Committee and the fight against violence against women
Gender Issues and Refugee Policy
Women and Armed Conflicts

A detailed syllabus and reading-list will be available at the beginning of the Course. Students will be expected to have done the reading prior to the seminars in order to be able to discuss the issues raised.

Examination will consist of  discussion of a Final Paper (not exceeding 10,000 words). An Attendance Certificate will be awarded at the end of the Course.
